We are looking to add an Engineer, Compliance to the Mechanical and Test Engineering team. Qualified candidates will be results-focused, self-directed, data-driven and the have the ability to adapt easily to the changing needs of the business and our customers. This is a hands-on position. You will be working with technicians, engineers, product development team, and third-party certification bodies to complete validation projects, product testing, building prototypes and maintaining test equipment.

Qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent education.
  • Understanding and experience with regulatory codes such as UL, NEC, NFPA, FCC, and other Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTLs).
  • Familiar with environmental directives such as REACH and RoHS.
  • Experience using writing tests standard procedures and protocols and report generation.
  • Use of 3D modeling software.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting test requirements, electric, electronic and mechanical drawings and schematics.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills the ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.

The Compliance Engineer is responsible for making sure various products meet safety standards. They shall support the Product Platforms and Product Launch Activities by submitting regulatory paperwork and educating personnel and customers about compliance requirements. The Compliance Engineer will maintain product safety listings and Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTLs), confirm regulatory compliance to Environmental directives, and support product compliance actions required for export.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include

  • Prevents compliance issues by collaborating with engineering and design teams; reviewing design data and material selection; identifying product design issues; identifying short-term and long-range issues; researching and identifying applicable regulatory and industry compliance standards and codes.
  • Reviews Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for compliance with product NRTL files and Environmental directives.
  • Develops compliance plans by researching, analyzing, and selecting appropriate product safety and regulator standards. Evaluates new compliance methodologies, qualifying vendors, components, and parts.
  • Assist in organizing compliance programs by preparing timetables, cost estimates, and required resources including test laboratories and equipment.
  • Determines compliance by reviewing compliance test standards; analyzing and evaluating findings; performing forensic analysis of failures; troubleshooting failures; supervising subcontractors.
  • Attains compliance by isolating and resolving non-compliance issues; recommending product and process changes; initiating engineering change orders; supporting NRLT audits.
  • Documents compliance by completing approval applications; recording test results; preparing investigative reports; preparing and filing Declarations of Conformity.
  • Maintains compliance database including certification markings and marketing materials to align with NRTL ratings.
  • Prepares compliance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing measurement data and trends.
  • Updates compliance knowledge by tracking and understanding emerging compliance engineering practices and standards; participating in educational opportunities and professional organizations; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks.
  • Controls access to the companies Regulatory Compliance partners, including UL gatekeeper and similar administrative roles.
  • Understands and interprets regulatory codes such as UL, NEC and NFPA.
  • Minimal travel may be required for field evaluations.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the customer and assigned by management. Supports and upholds the Quality and EHS policy. Upholds the Core Values.

Supervisory and Leadership Responsibilities

This role has no supervisory responsibilities but is expected to provide guidance to internal and external customers concerning Compliance topics, primarily NRTL compliance.

Qualified candidates will possess the following

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Electrical Engineering from four-year college or university and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical system design, and compliance is required.
  • Knowledge of electrical contact design, sliding contacts, and basic electrical concepts is desirable.
  • Ability to manage many concurrent projects while maintaining a high level of productivity to complete projects on time.
