Nebraska Medicine is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team. This role is ideal for anyone excited to learn and grow in ophthalmology. You'll greet patients, help prepare them for tests, and gather their health information to ensure everything runs smoothly. You may also assist with scribing and other administrative tasks to support our ophthalmologist and optometrist. The Career Ladder and Onboarding Program aims to equip students and new hires with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue careers supporting ophthalmologists and optometrists. The program was also designed to enhance the expertise of individuals already employed in the field of visual sciences.
By participating in this program, students and employees can:
Earn a certified ophthalmic assistant (COA) certificate as a high school junior or senior.
Earn noncredit COA in partnership with Clarkson College and TEI.
Explore the healthcare industry and experience working in ophthalmology.
Participate in the Ophthalmology Shadow Program (limited to three visits a year).

Duties: Ophthalmic Assistant
Provide administrative, technical, and quality patient care support to an ophthalmologist/optometrist in a clinical setting. Delivers on daily objectives to assist with meeting patients' needs. Communicates information to patients and others within the care team.
Required Qualifications: Ophthalmic Assistant
* High school education or equivalent required.
* Completion of an accredited Ophthalmic Assistant course OR completion of one year of post-secondary education in an allied health field OR one year of experience in a healthcare setting required.
*Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (BLS with skills assessment or approved BLS) within six months of hire required, must be from an American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed program (effective for new hires starting January 1, 2023 or later).
Preferred Qualifications: Ophthalmic Assistant
* Prior experience in ophthalmic or optometric office preferred.
* Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant course preferred.
* Certification as an ophthalmic assistant, technician or technologist preferred.
* Once certification is achieved, it is required to be maintained.
